Israeli police have arrested a 25 year old Arab Israeli suspected of carrying out missions for Iranian agents in exchange for thousands of shekels, as authorities investigate what they describe as a broader Iranian recruitment effort targeting people inside Israel.

The suspect, identified as Mohammad Halaf from Baqa al-Gharbiya in northern Israel, allegedly established contact with Iranian operatives and carried out tasks on their behalf in return for financial payments, according to Israeli police and the Shin Bet security agency.

Authorities said the alleged activity raised concerns over potential threats to Israel’s national security.

Halaf was expected to appear before the Haifa District Court on Friday, where prosecutors were expected to seek an indictment on security related charges.

The allegations have not been proven in court, and Halaf remains presumed innocent unless convicted.

Authorities Investigate Alleged Iranian Recruitment Network

Israeli security officials said the case is part of a broader pattern identified in several investigations in recent years involving alleged attempts by Iranian operatives to recruit Israeli citizens.

According to Israeli authorities, potential recruits have frequently been approached through social media and encrypted messaging platforms, including Telegram.

The suspected recruitment efforts have allegedly involved requests ranging from gathering information and conducting surveillance to carrying out other activities on behalf of Iranian handlers.

The latest arrest comes as Israeli authorities continue investigating suspected Iranian intelligence and influence operations targeting individuals inside Israel.

Israeli security agencies have arrested dozens of people over the past two years in cases involving allegations of collecting intelligence, conducting surveillance or performing other tasks for Iranian operatives.

Case Expected to Go Before Court

The case against Halaf will now move into judicial proceedings, where prosecutors will be required to present evidence supporting the allegations and establish the suspected connection between the defendant and Iranian operatives.

Authorities have not publicly disclosed the specific missions Halaf allegedly carried out or the nature of the information he may have provided.

Further details are expected to emerge as investigators present evidence and the court proceedings develop.

The arrest comes amid heightened tensions between Israel and Iran and continuing investigations into alleged Iranian intelligence activities in Israel and other countries.

For now, the allegations against Halaf remain subject to investigation and judicial review, with the court expected to determine whether the evidence supports the charges brought against him.
